Extractions

If you require a dental extraction in Christchurch then our dentists at Dental on Kilmore are able to help and will give you the best advice and care.

The best thing for your mouth health is having your own natural teeth. With regular dental visits, good home care and modern treatment methods it is often possible to keep your own teeth. However, sometimes tooth extraction may not be avoidable.

Why may teeth need to be extracted?

Wisdom teeth

Sometimes wisdom teeth do not come into the mouth aligned with the other teeth. This may make them at risk of gum problems, decay and other infections such as cysts. If a wisdom tooth is likely to create issues we will recommend removal.

Orthodontics

Some people may have more teeth than are able to fit in their jaw resulting in crowding. Crowded teeth can be more difficult to keep clean and may result in decay or gum disease. Crowded teeth can also create wear of your teeth. Extraction may be recommended prior or during orthodontic treatment.

Gum (periodontal) disease.

If gum disease is left untreated it will result in loss of bone around the teeth which may result in the tooth becoming loose. Teeth may need to be extracted if this becomes too advanced. If left untreated it develops into more advanced stages known as periodontal disease. Often gum disease is painless and is therefore often left untreated. Unfortunately, by the time it becomes a noticeable issue to you, often in the form of loose or separating teeth, or gums that pull away from the teeth, the gum disease is advanced and the damage has already been done.

Infected nerve

If a tooth has a damaged or infected nerve and is beyond repair, extraction may be required.

Is having a tooth extracted painful?

Tooth extractions can usually be carried out with simple local anaesthetic. More complex cases may need referral for treatment with sedation. At your appointment we will give you a home care pack including instructions for care and advice on pain relief. We recommend taking it easy for the remainder of the day after an extraction.

If you do have a tooth extracted and are looking at replacement options, you can speak with us about partial and full dentures, dental bridges and dental implants.
