Fillings

Sometimes, and even with diligent prevention methods, some people can still end up getting tooth decay and will require a filling.

What are the different types of fillings?

  • Amalgam (silver) Fillings:

These traditional fillings are strong and durable; however, they are not the same colour as the tooth and may require more extensive drilling/preparation on a tooth compared with more modern materials.

  • Composite resin (white) Fillings:

Popular for their natural appearance, composite fillings bond well to teeth and require less drilling compared to amalgam fillings. Modern composite fillings are comparable to amalgam in terms of strength and durability and will often be our first choice.

  • Gold Fillings/Onlays/Inlays:

Highly durable and more aesthetically pleasing compared to amalgam. However, gold fillings require more than one appointment and come at a higher cost.

  • Porcelain (Ceramic) Fillings/Onlays/Inlays:

Offering exceptional strength and a natural look, porcelain fillings are a top-of-the-line option. Similar to gold fillings, they may require more than one visit and are more expensive compared to composite and amalgam.

  • Glass Ionomer Cement Fillings:

These tooth-coloured fillings are cost-effective and release fluoride for added protection. However, they lack strength and are primarily used for temporary fillings.

How long do fillings last?

The longevity of fillings can vary depending on the material used, the size of the filling and the environment the filling is placed in. Typically, fillings which are kept free from plaque and bacteria will last longer. Teeth with fillings of a substantive size may be better restored with crowns.
